Poltimore House 1 /
Account written by: Groobs
Poltimore House, nestled on
the outskirts of the quaint village of Poltimore, was built in the sixteenth
century and has endured a rich and varied history, including founding use as
the family home of the Bampfylds (Bamfield) also as an all girls school and
finally as a hospital, under which guise it was boarded up in 1975. During the
last 29 years, the house has suffered a less glamorous history, having been
plundered for it’s fixtures and repeatedly vandalised. I’m thrilled to say
however, that since [S-P] was taken down a few years ago, a hard-working and devoted
group of volunteers have been restoring the property, which is now cocooned in a
weather protective shell. This is great news and a prime example of people
power. It would have been a shame to lose such a grand building.
